Aslaug Christine Thygesen

Aslaug Christine (Stina) was the second oldest daughter of Knud and Dorte Marie Thygesen Våsjø ... only my gr GM Mariken was older.

The siblings had a group portrait taken before Aslaug and Thomas left.
Aslaug was not the picture of health!  But the 'look' was not radically different from her siblings.  The group photo is on the Knud-Dorothy page.
Aslaug was, with her brother Thomas, the first of the siblings to emigrate, and arrived in 1884, going to Pierce Co. Wisconsin, where their Uncle Elling has settled about 1860.   Since the 1890  census was lost, her earliest location was in the 1900 census.  In that record, she was 'housekeeper' to William W Thayer and his wife.  Her younger cousin Marie Fossing also lived with the Thayers.  In the 1905 Wisconsin census, Mrs Thayer had presumably died, and the household was moved to Milwaukee.  Aslaug was 55.   Marie was at music school, becoming a pianist and teacher.  This picture. below, is of 'Stina' Thygesen.  The date is unknown, but probably dates to the 1890s:

It is hard to believe that this is the same woman, but a comparable photo of her younger sister Karen, is equally remarkable.

In the 1910 Census, Stina and Marie were still living in the home of Mr. Thayer, who was described as a manager.

I have found no later trace of Stina in the 1920 or later census.  I knew and visited Marie Fossing in the '70s.  She lived in River Falls, in the Fossing home, and had supported herself and sister as a piano teacher, and church organist.  At 95, she still played beautifully from memory ... but of course I didn't know any of the right questions to ask, including the story of 'Stina'.

I have one other picture that was described as Aslaug Larsen.  I have found no record of a marriage, and in any case Stina would have had to be almost 60 before a marriage.  But I think it is the missing sister

That was as much as I knew until I worked on old photos I borrowed, having visited granddaughters of Stina's youngest sister, Olette.   The photos included those taken on visits to Stina's sister Karen Jensen who lived with her family on a farm near Ellsworth, WI.

There were a few photos taken during the same visit(s) visiting family in 'Glenmont, MN'.  I have not been able to find any other reference to Glenmont, and there was no reference to the name of the family visited.  There was one photo, however, with description:  Mom (Olette), Uncle Tom and Carrie (Presumably Karen, who is in the photo) and 'Stina' (!).

Until I noted the added description, I had thought that the elderly lady on the R was Anne Marie Fossing, who was next oldest sister after Aslaug.
From the L:  Olette, Thomas, Karen (for sure)

When I compared the person identified as 'Stina' with photos of Anne Marie Fossing at similar age, I convinced myself that 'Stina' could, in fact be Aslaug Christine ... but that leaves a big mystery.  Who was the family at 'Glenmont'.  Who were the young persons who could not be children of Aslaug.  Were they Larsens?

I don't imagine that anyone will solve the mystery, but it leaves me with the question, where and with whom was Stina, after the 1910 census

There were two other younger sisters, who came later.  I have found no record of them after they arrived.  I am now convinced, however, that Gunhild Elise and Liv Pauline both died not too long after they arrived.   Some trees have included these names as daughters of Elling and Anne, but the dates are identical with the known birth dates of Gunhild Elise and Liv Pauline.   They are surely Knud and Dorthe's missing daughters.   From the Thygesen plots in Rush River Lutheran Church cemetery:
