In 1845, Knud's eldest son, Thyge Knudsen Naas and his entire family, save the eldest son Knud, emigrated to the Pine Lake settlement in Wisconsin. After more that 150 years the families have scattered across the US & Norway. Now descendants of each of the Thygesen families have found each other. This blog is intended to serve as a 'virtual family reunion'. See About this Blog for more. Anyone with interest or information is welcome to join us.

I was curious with the holiday season fast approaching if anyone knows of any Naas or Nelson Thanksgiving or Christmas traditions old or recent?
ReplyDeleteIs there any information on how our Norwegian ancestors celebrated Christmas or how our immigrant ancestors celebrated Thanksgiving or Christmas?
Feel free to share any family traditions more recent as well!
Good question ... If there are traditions from 'the old country', they would be pretty old, at least in our family, which came in 1845-46, as did my wife's family from Vik i Sogn. It turns out that Lutefisk and Lefse aren't very common in modern Telemark. The cousins weren't even sure what lefse was, and lutefisk raised no enthusiasm. Lots of the 'customs' which we celebrate in this country long ago died out in Norway. In the five times we've been there, we only heard Uff Da exclaimed once. The 'traditions' are much more in play in our 21st century home than they ever were in my parents or grandparents homes. How about others?
